For privacy, Cake Wallet lets you connect to a remote node by default. You can point it at your own node if you run one, but most users rely on external nodes maintained by the wallet team or community. This is a trust tradeoff. The remote node sees your IP address and can link it to your transaction broadcasts. Cake Wallet does not claim to hide your IP - the privacy of the transaction itself depends on Monero’s cryptographic protections, not on the wallet’s network layer.

Cake Wallet also supports Tor integration on Android, which helps obscure your IP. But on iOS, Tor support is absent as of this writing. If you use an iPhone, your remote node connection is not routed through the Tor network.

The desktop option: monero GUI

The official Monero GUI client is a full desktop application. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its killer feature is control. You can run a full node, download the entire blockchain, and validate every transaction yourself. This eliminates the remote-node trust problem entirely. No third party sees your IP when you broadcast. No intermediary can lie about the state of the chain.

Running a full node has costs. The Monero blockchain is over 160 GB as of mid-2024. Synchronization takes days on slower hardware. The GUI itself is functional but not polished - it works, but the UI can feel cluttered and laggy compared to Cake Wallet’s smooth mobile experience.

The GUI also offers advanced node configuration: you can set custom bandwidth limits, prune the blockchain to save disk space, or connect to a remote node you trust. You decide the balance between privacy and resource usage.

Mobile and desktop wallets have different attack surfaces. A mobile device is with you constantly. If lost or stolen, a weakly secured phone can expose your wallet. But mobile operating systems (iOS and modern Android) sandbox apps tightly, making it harder for malware to access your seed phrase.

A desktop computer is more vulnerable to malware that can steal clipboard contents or screen-capture your keys. Malicious browser extensions are a real threat. On the other hand, you can run the Monero GUI on an air-gapped machine or a dedicated Linux install, achieving a level of security no phone can match.

Remote node vs full node

Cake Wallet’s default remote node setup is convenient. You get privacy from Monero’s cryptographic defaults - ring signatures, stealth addresses, and confidential transactions - but not from your node operator. The operator sees your IP and the timing of your transactions. If you trust the operator (or use Tor), this is acceptable. If you do not, you need your own node.

The Monero GUI supports full nodes out of the box. You become your own operator. No trust required. This is the strongest privacy configuration available for Monero.

Community Alternatives

Feather Wallet is a desktop alternative to the Monero GUI. It is lighter, faster, and aims for a simpler experience while still supporting full node and remote node connections. It is open-source and maintained by the Monero community. Feather requires no blockchain download to function.

Monerujo is an Android-only mobile wallet. It is older than Cake Wallet and offers a different interface. It supports remote nodes and Tor, and it gives you more visible control over node settings. It does not support other cryptocurrencies. If you only hold Monero and use Android, Monerujo is worth trying.

Which profile fits which wallet

Cake Wallet suits users who value convenience, want to hold multiple privacy coins in one app, and are comfortable trusting a remote node operator or routing traffic through Tor on Android. It is the best choice for on-the-go transactions.

The Monero GUI suits users who need full control, run their own hardware, or are willing to trade ease of use for the strongest possible privacy. It is a tool for the technically confident.
